In the mystical land of Samandağ, in the province of Hatay…

… where the winds whisper the ancient tales of Khidr—the green man who guides wanderers—history and culture flow through the air like incense. This is a land where faiths intertwine; where Sunni, Alawite, Christian, and Jewish communities have lived side by side for centuries, crafting a unique tapestry of humanity and spirit.

Enter Cem Baba, the mystical renegade who was meant to lead a revolution of sorts: a 1001 Nights Sema Festival. It wasn’t just going to be a party; it was supposed to bring people together in an unbroken circle of dance, music, and spiritual ecstasy. But fate had other plans. The day he and his crew of dervishes were set to scout out Samandağ, the earthquake hit.

The festival got sidelined, but the mission didn’t.

Instead of spinning in dance, Cem Baba and the dervishes spun into action. They didn’t turn away. They went straight into the rubble. Since February 2023, they’ve been on the ground, helping where it’s needed most.

The festival didn’t happen the way they’d planned, but something else took its place: an ongoing act of service, a living festival of love and compassion, one brick, one meal, one handshake at a time. The real celebration has been the work—helping rebuild homes and lives.

What’s happening in Samandağ isn’t about official organizations or big names swooping in to save the day. It’s about people. Neighbors helping neighbors. Locals, dervishes, volunteers—people who didn’t wait for permission to care. They’ve been working outside the system, improvising where they had to, ignoring red tape, and getting their hands dirty. This is grassroots, raw, and real.
